Lidded jar

The lidded jars are often thrown and altered using faceting, paddling or squaring. These techniques are done on the wheel when throwing. The faceting and paddling are formed using a cheese cutter or wooden carved mallet on the wet clay. The jars are turned at the leather hard stage and lids fitted and often the final beating is carried out then. They are tended at various stages during the drying stages to clarify the forms. Flat beaten surfaces give break up of design at the decorating stage forming a natural flat surface for decorative techniques. Slips and porcelain hakeme are often used in combination at the leather hard stage to give added texture under the reduction glazes.
